When last time I watched a jukebox musical, I didn’t like it, especially the story (I don’t even want to mention it). Leaving the theatre, I was thinking what I just watched. Anyway, I still decided to watch another one, giving jukebox musicals one more chance. Somehow it worked this time.
The Band features the music of Take That, whose songs I had never heard of, even I did, I don’t remember. The story is about five young girls who like the same boy band. After they grew up, they met again on their way to the concert of the band in Prague. I didn’t expect the story to be good for a jukebox musical, but this one is. It’s well-written and heartwarming. The staging is amazing, very immersive for the flight scene. Despite all that, the music doesn’t work that well for me. I saw people waving their arms with music and dancing, even humming the lyrics, I wasn’t one of them. The music is nice, but not to the point I want to sing and dance. As I said, I didn’t know their music, and I’m more of a show tune person. Leaving the theatre, I was thinking I would try more jukebox musicals if their story can be well-written as this one.
