異型奇花 Little Shop of Horrors

This show was held in the outdoor theater, and I liked it very much!  One you enter into the “theater” area, there are actually outdoor places (covered) to get something to eat or drink, so naturally I started out by getting a beer.

I was a little bit tired just before entering, and the pint of beer helped perk me up for the show.  This show is about killer plants, and it was very nice to see the stage itself with a backdrop of real live plants (trees!)  The show we saw was a matinee, so the only downside was that for the first 45 minutes of the show or so, we needed to sit in direct sunlight.  I was prepared by wearing sunscreen and I had a baseball cap on.  Just don’t forget to do that. 

The show held my attention throughout and was absolutely entertaining.  The very best part of the show and what made it so incredibly funny is that the killer plant was played by a heavy-set American drag queen wearing a really tight plant outfit.  And she said “FEED ME!  FEED ME!” and it was completely hilarious!  (She was a great singer too.  My hat is off to the costume designer of this musical.  These were funny and so well thought out.) 

Without giving away too many details about the show, it’s basically about a plant store that starts to breed unusual plants to increase sales, until finally the plants develop a taste for human blood, rather than ordinary fertilizer.  So the shopkeepers need to find ways to keep the plant growing without suffering from too much blood loss.  It just gets crazier beyond that point.  During the intermission I went and had a snack.  The music throughout the show was just fantastic and it was performed very well.  What I couldn’t finally understand was where the orchestra were positioned.  Were the behind the audience at the top of the stadium-style seating?  Or was the orchestra hidden behind the stage itself?  We were sitting in the second row towards the right side of the stage and had a good view of everything, although I think no matter where you would seat it should pretty much look okay.  I highly recommend this one!
