The Greatest Showman review
Finally! A show where the attractive people aren't the heroes! I'm
sick and tired of seeing all the beautiful people in other musicals get
everything they want at the end of the story. Here, the freaks are the heroes
of the story; in other words, people I can actually relate to. The bearded
lady, the really tall man, the midget riding a horse into the theater. By the
end of the story I came to love many of the characters and relate to
them!
I've just about had it with all the sappy love stories in musicals,
where the guy and girl are either together and happy or apart and sad, because
then I keep thinking about all my own problems, but when I see the circus
characters, the singing, the dancing, and the story of the circus itself, it
makes me feel happy in a way that's not easy to explain. And for that, I'm
going to give this musical (and the movie) an A. Rare for me, because I'm
easily bored watching musicals. I liked the story about a man following his
dreams, about other characters who were living in the shadows enjoying their
lives and following their own dreams, and about overcoming difficulties that
are, in this movie at least, unrelated for the most part to love and
relationships.
I'm now writing this review a good four weeks or so after I
actually saw the musical. I have to admit that at this point, not a single one
of the songs has stuck in my head and I'm basically unable to remember a single
tune or what any of the songs were about. That doesn't exactly mean that the
songs weren't memorable, only that my own memory isn't so good! What is left
with me now is basically an impression, and my impression was favorable. I
recommend the movie, for the characters, the music, and for the story. If you
are tired of seeing people sing about their love lives in musicals, then you'll
like this show too.
